Quick Hits

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's campaign is winning over Steam players after all the pre-launch drama — Eurogamer calls it one of the most well-received CODs in recent history, and Kotaku says reviews make it sound "surprisingly good."
  • Steam Next Fest 2026 is live with more than double last year's demo count — over 8,000 demos per PC Gamer — even as Eurogamer questions how much of the lineup is generative "AI slop."
  • Arc Raiders' Frozen Trail finally puts the "raid" in Arc Raiders, per PC Gamer — the extraction shooter is getting the raid experience its name promised.
  • Epic Games is under fire for an apparent pivot to "AI-accelerated development", with GameSpot arguing it's time for Epic and Tim Sweeney to "touch grass" — even as Konami tells Rock Paper Shotgun that real people matter most for making good games.
  • Pokémon Pokopia's Halloween event runs October 17 – November 1, adding two Gen 6 Ghost-types to the mix.

Pokémon & Nintendo

Pokémon Pokopia is getting spooky: the Pumpkaboo's Sweet Surprises event (October 17 – November 1) adds two Gen 6 Ghost-types, and Nintendo Life has a full guide covering everything from Pumpkin Candy to Gourgeist. Over on the subreddit, the community is busy wishing aloud for Pokémon Legends: Z-A — with the Linking Cord item from Legends: Arceus topping requests for trade-evolution workarounds — while first-time Nuzlockers swap beginner tips, one trainer hunts a stubborn Raikou in Pokémon Crystal, and an adorable Mimikyu OC makes the rounds.

Elsewhere on Nintendo Life, a moving feature revisits how The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time helped one writer process grief at seven years old — proof this series' power goes way beyond dungeons. GameSpot, meanwhile, charts Fire Emblem's remarkable comeback: not a Mario- or Zelda-scale sales juggernaut, but one of Nintendo's preeminent franchises. And the latest Nintendo Life Mailbox (Issue #41) digs into rising costs, non-compliant EU Switches, and WarioWare Fantasia.

Call of Duty

The big story: after pre-launch community drama and lower-than-expected PC beta numbers, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's final campaign is a genuine turnaround story. Eurogamer reports Steam players seem delighted, making it one of the best-received entries in recent history, while Kotaku's read on the reviews is "a return to form if not to Call of Duty's heyday."

The superplayers are already at it too — IGN spotlights the first player to conquer YOLO mode, the ultra-hard setting with realistic damage that sends you straight back to the start when you die. In sadder news, VGC reports Modern Warfare 4 pays tribute to the late Vince Zampella, COD co-creator and Infinity Ward co-founder, who worked on the series up to 2009 and was in charge of rival series Battlefield when he died. And looking ahead: Eurogamer (citing an Activision interview with The Game Business) says next year's Call of Duty will launch a brand-new sub-series rather than returning to an existing one.

Fortnite

Quiet on the island today, but the bigger Epic Games story is loud: GameSpot's op-ed takes Epic to task over its stance on AI, reporting the company appears to be pivoting to "AI-accelerated development" with Tim Sweeney defending the approach. It's a sharp contrast to Konami, which told Rock Paper Shotgun that as much of the industry embraces "their own death through genAI," it's real people who are most important for making good games.

Arc Raiders

Per PC Gamer, Frozen Trail finally delivers on the promise in the name — putting a genuine raid into Arc Raiders. If you've been waiting for Embark's extraction shooter to lean into that half of its title, this is the update to watch.

Indie Games

Steam Next Fest is a treasure hunt as always, and the picks are already surfacing. Rock Paper Shotgun highlights Rain98, a blue-hued, pre-Y2K, Serial Experiments Lain-inspired visual novel set in Tokyo, 1998, about a woman calling herself the Angolmois who time-travels to the past to end the world — the demo is absolutely worth a boot-up. GameSpot flags Tenebris Somnia, a horror game blending 2D visuals with live-action frights that's already discounted at launch. And for something gloriously silly: PC Gamer reports 23 devs teamed up on a free browser game of "innovative yet questionable volume sliders" that plays like browser-based WarioWare.

The dark comedy of the week comes from Kotaku: the devs of a Needle In A Haystack Simulator clone are accusing another clone of being a "byte-for-byte identical" rip-off of their work — clone-makers complaining about being cloned. Gaming's vibe-coded apocalypse truly eats its own tail.

Steam & PC

Steam Next Fest 2026 has more than double last year's demos — over 8,000 by PC Gamer's count — but both PC Gamer and Eurogamer raise the same uncomfortable question about how much of that flood is low-effort, AI-generated filler. Valve's also beta testing Steam Achievement Sets, per Eurogamer, letting developers group achievements into collections so new content doesn't shatter your 100% completion status — a quiet quality-of-life win for achievement hunters.

And in the "how is this still invite-only?!" file: Destructoid reports Deadlock has cracked 300,000 concurrent players following a new hero release, yet another record for Valve's closed-alpha curiosity.

Gaming Roundup

  • Award season is here: Destructoid reports Golden Joysticks voting for best console game of 2026 is open, with 10 shortlisted heavy-hitters including Resident Evil: Requiem and SAROS — though the outlet notes it's already snubbed some of the year's best titles.
  • GameSpot tells the underdog story of Outlast: no publisher wanted it, and 60 million players later, the horror juggernaut is doing just fine.
  • Ex-Capcom manager Miguel E. Corti discussed Resident Evil 7's tumultuous development on Bluesky ("I lost track of the versions"), via Nintendo Life.
  • Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft is less than a month away, and IGN sat down with designer James Wyatt about the massive tabletop expansion.
  • Stuck in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse? GameSpot explains how to enter Notre Dame past Death's clock trap — and is giving away 19 Castlevania games plus two DLCs.
  • Castlevania tip of the hat: if the monster-infested Paris streets have you hooked too, that giveaway is a no-brainer.

That's the digest! Go download some Next Fest demos, thank a dev made of real humans, and we'll see you tomorrow. 🎮
